Crown lengthening is a procedure to remove gum tissue and/or bone to expose more of a tooth’s structure. Crown lengthening is performed to address a gummy smile, to access decay under the gum line, or a smile in which the teeth structure is excessively covered by gingival tissue. A gummy smile may make teeth appear smaller than they actually are. This procedure may be performed cosmetically or may also be performed to help improve gum health.
